WTVM Legal Break – Back Log of Criminal and Civil Cases

Injury & Accident Attorney Serving Nearby Areas of Columbus & Fort Benning, Georgia and Phenix City, Alabama

Gary Bruce discusses the back log of criminal cases in Muscogee County and the efforts being made to correct this issue. The District Attorney’s office and the Public Defender’s office have implemented new programs in order to speed up the adjudication of cases in the criminal system. Processing criminal cases quickly is important because it is expensive to house defendants who cannot make bail while they await trial, and also to assure the accused of their right to a speedy trial.

Gary also discusses the difference between the criminal and civil systems and how mediation and alternative dispute resolution has impacted civil dockets, trials, and resolution of claims. He points out that attempts to expedite resolution do not deprive a plaintiff of his or her right to a Civil jury trial,  The programs help to settle disputes quickly without the expense associated with a trial.
